Saturday Night Live could not have come up with something this funny. The best part is, it’s for real!
I’m pretty safe in assuming that no one over at the Lawrence Welk Show knew what the word “toke” meant.

Oh my! It’s the “sweet Jesus” and “sweet Mary” that they heard. I love Lawrence Welk’s comment at the end – a modern spiritual.
Thanks- that was a hoot.

Weed green suits on the band at the beginning?
The “Archuleta” Sisters and the Otwell Twins would have been better singing that (one can just imagine the knowing glances). Before their time, I think.

I’m not sure when this show aired, but the song “One Toke Over the Line” was a hit for Brewer & Shipley in 1970, and since Myron Floren says something about “one of the more recent songs” or something to that effect, I guess this show comes from ‘71 or ‘72. The sisters-who-shall-remain-surnameless and the Otwell Twins didn’t join the show until 1977 (I looked it up on Wikipedia, lest anyone think I am up on my Lawrence Welk lore!). But wouldn’t it have been beautiful if they had been on the show at the time: they no doubt would have been busting four guts backstage!
Just think of how many teenagers were watching Lawrence with Grandma on a Saturday evening when this gem originally aired!

Yes, Cap’n, Myron and the boys ARE arrayed in green at the beginning of the clip, aren’t they? And why is Myron choking/coughing? I wonder if the band all broke out the Cheetos during the song . . .
It does give one pause.

Well, I, being more innocent than most believe of me, would like to know how many tokes it take to get to the line? Or is it more like “how many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?”

In Gail and Dale’s case, I would imagine just one toke would put both of them over the line.

I’m just old enough to remember that public schools used to actually have smoking areas for sixteen-year olds. Some students were inhaling something other than Marlboros and Camels, to the tune of being one toke over the line. Funny thing was, no-one actually witnessed them doing so. (Thank goodness they were the filthy rich kids who didn’t have to push to support their habit.)
